Sharing and re-using learning materials – a request for views from art, design and media disciplines

The Higher Education Council for England have committed an initial £5.7 million of funding for pilot projects to explore the sharing and re-use of learning materials in higher education. 

The goal of the programme is to make learning resources created by those working in higher education freely available to educators and learners in the sector.  These ‘Open Educational Resources’ are defined as “teaching, learning and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property licence that permits their free use or re-purposing by others.  Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials or techniques used to support access to knowledge.” (Definition used by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation).

The “subject-based” strand of the funding enables the Subject Centre to work with art / design / media departments, professional bodies and other relevant organisations   to put forward a consortium bid for project funding of up to £250,000.

Successful bids will work to develop processes to facilitate the release of learning resources and make these available for use by the subject community. The projects will begin in April 2009 and run for 12 months.

We would value your views and suggestions for how we might initiate a proposal for a project that responds to the particular needs of art / design / media higher education.  In particular, we would value your thoughts on the following:

•    How could this initiative benefit art / design / media higher education?
•    Are there specific themes or aspects of art / design / media higher education that should be addressed?
•    Would you be interested in being involved in the project?
