Box of Broadcasts - iPlayer for education

Television and radio broadcast content is now available as an online streaming service to thousands of students and researchers for the first time following the launch of Box of Broadcasts (BoB National) by the JISC part-funded British Universities Film and Video Council (BUFVC).

The off-air recording and video archive service is available to staff and students of the Education Recording Agency (ERA) licensed member institutions. Like the BBC 'iPlayer', it allows users to watch or listen to programmes missed in the last week. However, unlike iPlayer, programmes to air over the coming seven days can be scheduled, recorded and do not expire. This means they can be archived and available indefinitely, making it invaluable for lecturers and students requiring constant access.

The BUFVC has been piloting BoB National with its partners, Bournemouth University and Cambridge Imaging Systems and there are thousands of users already signed up. BoB National is self-perpetuating, so the more institutions sign up and record programmes, the more content is made available to other users.

Technology Change for Inclusion
12 steps towards Embedding Inclusive Practice with Technology as a Whole Institution Culture in UK Higher Education

This briefing is an abbreviated version of a research paper by JISC TechDis that contains the full outcomes of the Technology Change for Inclusion (TCI) initiative.

A series of interviews were held with senior staff in UK Higher Education Institutions to elicit good practice in embedding inclusive practice with technology as a whole institution culture. The good (and poor) practice uncovered has led directly to the formulation of the 12 Steps highlighted in this Briefing. Where this issue is led directly by a Deputy or ProVice Chancellor it has been shown to have the most impact and effect, although these effects are very difficult to attribute to such a change in cultural ethos (see Step 12).

Learning Through Enquiry Alliance Conference 2009

The LTEA  is an alliance of seven CETLs with a strong collective interest in enquiry-based learning and links between teaching and research.

They are pleased to announce their 4th annual conference.  The aim of the conference will be to bring together diverse perspectives on enquiry-based learning, showcasing the varied approaches to engaging students and the impact on their learning experiences. They will also be focusing on the staff perspective of using enquiry-based learning in the curriculum. The conference will provide the opportunity to exchange research and practice and enable participants to make new connections with each other across disciplines, professional roles and institutions.

NTFS Project event - Bridging the Gap: transitions in student writing

The Flying Start NTFS Project will be hosting a large cross sector symposium in collaboration with the Write Now and Learnhigher CETLs at Liverpool Hope. The symposium is entitled: 'Bridging the Gap: transitions in student writing, a symposium'

This is an event for educators interested in supporting and developing students’ academic writing through the transition from further to higher Education.

Across all sectors of education and in almost all disciplines writing, in its many forms, is at the heart of learning and assessment. However, developing and utilising this skill is something that many students find difficult and this often becomes particularly apparent at the juncture between further and higher education as students are presented with new teaching and learning styles and find very different expectations and assessment criteria placed upon them. This symposium will consider ways of easing this transition.

Designs on Assessment Conference
Leeds Metropolitan University

The NTFS funded project “First-year assessment: Aligning perceptions and practice with purpose” lead by Leeds Metropolitan University is running this conference.

The conference will be of interest to all higher education staff involved in designing or redesigning assessment for programmes or modules and will be of particular interest to programme teams looking to enhance their assessment practices.

Symposium on Evaluative Practice in Higher Education

The aim of this seminar is to examine and explore evaluative practices in Higher Education (HE) through examples from a number of European countries with a view to improving the understanding of the role of evaluation at different levels and to encourage dialogue between the actors involved. By ‘evaluative practice’ they mean any activities associated with the way value or worth is attributed to what Higher Education does. This can range from the regulation of national and institutional systems of HE to small scale developmental reflection within small groups of teachers and learners.



Finding, Clearing and Editing - Moving Image Media for Education

This one-day course will guide participants through the many  sources of moving image and sound for educational use including radio and television broadcasts and online materials.It will also explore the copyright implications of using moving image and sound materials in teaching and learning both on- and off-campus. Those attending will participate in a practical session on how to compile and use video and audio materials in lectures, seminars and electronic resources.This one day course will include discussions of:

  • Copyright and educational use of moving image and sound
  • TV, Radio and Off-Air Recordings, including the BUFVC services Box of Broadcasts (BoB) and TRILT (Television and Radio Index for Learning and Teaching)
  • Editing moving image and sound for use on the web (including in a VLE) and Powerpoint presentations
  • BUFVC databases including BUND (British Universities Newsreels Database) and HERMES
  • Online sound and image resources for education
  • Independent radio archives broadcasts available via BUFVC
