This issue includes feature articles and projects which explore varying conceptions of 'creativity' in art, design and media teaching.

Books for review
The ADM-HEA Subject Centre's collection of Resource Reviews has been written by colleagues who share their experiences and recommendations. Reviews are selected on the basis that they identify an appropriate resource, analyse and evaluate potential use of the resource.

Selected reviews will be added to our database and are accessible on the ADM-HEA website.  Some reviews will also be published in our quarterly newsletter. We pay £50.00 for an accepted review and the reviewer is free to keep the review copy.

Information from DIUS on graduate internships
The government has made an announcement on its plans for graduate internships. The package of measures to help combat graduate unemployment will include opportunities for both paid and unpaid work experience in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Under the scheme, graduates already claiming Job Seekers' Allowance will be eligible to receive it for up to 13 weeks while on an unpaid placement.

The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) has published a brochure (see the PDF below) containing details of the scheme and set up a Graduate Talent Pool website: where employers can register their interest. From 13 May 2009, interested employers will also be able to access advice and guidance.

Art Design and Media Learning and Teaching Creative Practice

We are delighted to announce that the keynote presentation for ADM-HEA’s third learning and teaching day this summer will feature film director Ken Russell in conversation with Mark Kermode.  

The keynote forms part of the Creative Practice learning and teaching day and the formal framework of the event will include presentations, workshops and networking opportunities, covering a broad spectrum of issues and concerns across the art, design and media sector with innovation and creativity as the overarching theme.

In addition, we will cover issues such as the ADM fellowships, visual plagiarism, creative practice, working across disciplines, the changing landscape of the art, design and media curriculum - and so much more !

Expectations, Experiences and Encounters in HE and HE in FE – The 3Es
University of Bolton

We still have some places available for this one-day event. It is hosted by the University of Bolton on behalf of the NW Network Group and has been developed to disseminate the findings of collaborative research into student expectations, experiences and encounters with higher education undertaken in the Northwest of England.

Student expectations, experiences and encounters, and staff perceptions were explored through innovative research partnerships between staff teaching higher education art, design and media in universities and further education colleges. The value of these  partnerships will also form a focus for the day.

The keynote speaker is Professor Mantz Yorke who will present issues that have arisen from the research he has undertaken on the student experience.

Ian Lindsay, Academic Advisor HE in FE for the Higher Education Academy Subject Network will talk about why and how HE in FE staff can get involved in scholarly activity and how the Academy and its Subject Centres can help to facilitate this.

9th Annual Learning and Teaching Conference -
The Dynamics of Difference: Making it work
Middlesex University Business School, Hendon Campus

Hosted by Middlesex University Business School in conjunction with the Centre for Learning and Quality Enhancement.
With keynotes from Professor Liz Thomas, Director of the Widening Participation Research Centre, Edge Hill University, and Carol Campayne, Equality and Diversity Manager, London South Bank University, and a Director of The Diversity Practice, addressing the issues and challenges of delivering both diversity and inclusivity within higher education this promises to be an interesting and enjoyable event.

In addition to these main sessions, there will be workshops on a variety of diversity issues presented by Middlesex University staff and by invited external visitors including:

•    Dr Jan Sellers from the University of Kent will bring along her Labyrinth for participants to walk and explore.
•    Dr André Van der Westhuizen from the University of Portsmouth will facilitate a session on The Gaming Generation.
•    John C McCarthy, Mental Health Coordinator from the University of East London will also give a session on Innovation and Partnership in Developing student pathways to care.

The charge for the day will be £50 to cover all refreshments and lunch.

EVA London Postgraduate Student Research Workshop
British Computer Society, Covent Garden
Monday 6 July 2009, from 10.00 to 13.00

EVA (electronic visualisation and the arts) Postgraduate Student Research Workshop in the field of Culture and Information:

This Workshop provides an opportunity for Masters and PhD students working in this area to present their ideas, plans or initial results in a supportive and relatively informal environment. No written paper is required; just a presentation of fifteen minutes followed by five minutes for Q & A and discussion.

Overall they aim to provide an opportunity for young researchers to take a first step on the ladder of presentations and, importantly, networking with colleagues from other universities as well as with participants from the main EVA London Conference. To this end both attendees and speakers at the Postgraduate Student Research Workshop are warmly encouraged to also attend the main Conference. They also welcome students as attendees, hoping that some of them will present their work in 2010/2011.

Participants to the Research Workshop may attend that day free of charge.
Numbers are limited, so you are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.  There are also bursaries for those without access to grants for conferences. Please see the bursary information page

Following on from last year’s theme of the mainstreaming of academic credit, the focus of the Conference is “Credit based Curricula: Choices and Challenges”.
Keynote speakers:

In addition to input from the keynote speakers providing a specialist  perspective on important current issues such as credit-based funding for HE, there will be the opportunity to engage in informal debate on both policy and practice. Workshops confirmed will include:

  • Chris Rust and Berry O’Donovan from Oxford Brookes, who will discuss strategies for improving credit based assessment systems and practice
  • Tony Turjansky from Edge Hill University will outline the considerations of level, learning outcomes and volume of learning in the design of a module-based curriculum
  • Frank Lyons from the University of Portsmouth who will lead a session on offering quality assured APEL
  • Annie Watts and Jane Campbell-Baigrie from the University of Plymouth will provide an insight into their innovative approach to AP(EL) within the Faculty of Health & Social Work
  • European credit and qualifications issues update (leader tbc)

They will also hold a consultation and feedback session on SEEC’s revised (2009 version) Credit Level Descriptors. They welcome additional offers of workshops and papers relevant to the conference theme.

The 17th Improving Student Learning (ISL) International conference

The organisers hope that the theme for this symposium - 'for the 21st Century Learner'  - will challenge contributors to consider the rapidly changing landscape of university education - technology, massification, increased diversity of students and globalisation etc.

Keynote speakers will be:

Simon Barrie,  Associate Director of the Institute for Teaching and Learning at the University of Sydney, Australia
Betty Collis, Emeritus Professor at the University of Twente, Netherlands 
David Kember, Professor in Research on Teaching and Learning in Higher Education at the University of Hong Kong

The major aim of the Improving Student Learning Symposia is to provide a forum which brings together those who are primarily researchers into learning in higher education and those who are primarily practitioners concerned more pragmatically with improving their practice, but from whichever starting point, papers are only accepted if they take a sufficiently scholarly, research-based approach.

This year they have contributors from the following countries: Sweden, Hong Kong, Yemen, Australia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Uk. A total of 35 papers will be presented at the conference and all participants, whether presenting papers or not, are invited to bring a poster presenting work they are doing which is concerned with improving student learning: research work which is 'in progress', issues you would like to discuss, practices you would like to share, and so on.

Creative Interventions - request for participants in online survey

The University of the Arts London, in collaboration with the Arts Institute at Bournemouth and SCEPTrE at the University of Surrey, is currently funded by the HEA National Teaching Fellowship project scheme to research creative and performing arts student's experiences of public and voluntary sector work related activity. This includes work placements, competitions, social enterprise, charity work, volunteering and more. We know there is a vast range of exciting activity going on and we want to explore the territory and uncover the rich learning, life-wide benefits and issues surrounding these experiences.

5th Biennial Northumbria/EARLI SIG Assessment Conference: “Assessment for Learners”
Northumbria University

Conference themes:
·        Formative and summative assessment to improve learning
·        Assessment: consequences and contexts for learners
·        Learner achievements and assessment

The conference will explore the ways in which assessment impacts on students’ experiences of learning and ways of improving learning via assessment in all sectors of education (higher education, early years, primary, secondary and further education), different disciplines and different educational systems.  Submissions can focus on assessment cultures and assessment reform more broadly as well as research on specific innovations in assessment, including e-assessment.  The conference will be of interest to both education researchers and practitioners with an interest in assessment.

Action on Access is looking for examples of how HEIs and Aimhigher partnerships are working to increase the participation of boys in higher education.  Some of these examples will be included in a report, initially presented to the HEFCE in June.
