The Charles Parker Prize 2011

The University of Sunderland is pleased to announce that the Charles Parker Prize, originally established in 2004, will be awarded again in 2011.  Last year, for the first time, they introduced two additional prizes of Silver and Bronze for the runners-up. In 2011 they will again be awarding prizes of Gold, Silver and Bronze to three individual students for the best radio feature completed and assessed during the qualifying period.

The winners will be announced at the annual Charles Parker Day at The CastleGate in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on Friday, 1 April 2011.

The deadline for entries is midnight on Friday, 25 February 2011 (no entries will be accepted after this date)

The competition is FREE to enter and offers the following prizes:-

  • GOLD: 2 week placement in BBC Features and Documentaries in Broadcasting House, London + £200, provided by the Charles Parker Trust to cover expenses, and a SADiE 6 editing system provided by Prism Sound.

  • SILVER:  2 week placement in an independent production company + £200 to cover expenses.

  • BRONZE: 1 week placement in an independent production company + £100 to cover expenses.

The Judges for the Charles Parker Prize 2011 will be:

  • Simon Elmes, Creative Director, Features and Documentaries, BBC 
  • Sara Parker,  freelance radio producer and Charles' daughter
  • Miranda Sawyer, Radio Critic of The Observer

This award is open to students studying radio at Further or Higher Education establishments within the United Kingdom for a radio feature (maximum duration 15 minutes) produced between 1 March 2010 and February 2011.

The feature should in some way reflect an essence of Parker's own work - for example, story led documentaries (or short features) that bring life to the stories and concerns of ordinary people through creative radio production techniques.

Entries must adhere to the terms and conditions of entry and be submitted on Audio CD accompanied by a signed Entry Form.
