JISC TechDis Online Accessibility Self Evaluation Sessions

In 2007 and 2008 JISC TechDis worked with a range of Universities and Colleges across the UK to evaluate the pragmatism of Disability Equality Statements and the accessibility of a variety of policies and processes including the presentation of online prospectuses. Many Disability Equality Statements have little or no direct relationship to the daily needs of disabled users and made no mention of the teaching and learning accommodations and technologies that are critical to the success of disabled learners. Marketing prospectuses also often lacked easily provided accessibility features.

Although technical accessibility guidelines exist (such as PAS78 and WCAG) there has been little in the way of plain English, contextual advice for individuals undertaking particular roles to help them;

  • identify which areas need attention, and
  • identify what that attention might entail.

The JISC TechDis Accessibility Self Evaluation tools help bridge that gap, and point to the advice and guidance needed to make a difference to inclusion in six key institutional roles. By targeting different staff roles with pragmatic, easily implemented solutions the service helps maximise coherent implementation of inclusive practices across institutions.
