3 new National Teaching Fellows in ADM subjects

Date posted: 06/07/2007

Three teachers in the art, design and media subjects have been awarded the prestigious National Teaching Fellowship (NTF) from the Higher Education Academy – three of only fifty Fellowships awarded nationwide. The NTF Scheme is funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and recognises and rewards individual excellence in teaching in higher education in England and Northern Ireland.

The new National Teaching Fellows are:

Dr David Allen, Head of the School of Creative Arts, Film & Media at the University of Portsmouth for his developmental initiatives in curriculum and pedagogy and explorations into the relationship between research and teaching in undergraduate work.

June Bianchi, Senior Lecturer and University Teaching Fellow in Art Education at Bath Spa University has initiated and developed a wide range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels across the School of Education.  June's Postgraduate Certificate in Education for Secondary School Art teachers achieved immediate success, drawing highly complimentary comments from students, external examiners and Ofsted for the quality of her teaching.

Dr Alan Rice from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) who is a Reader in American Cultural Studies, teaches students using a selection of ‘active learning’ methods and in a variety of genres ranging from visual arts, music and drama as well as literature and historical contextualisation. He strongly believes that active learning is the most engaging way to gain knowledge.
