Date posted: 20/07/2011

A Conference
Saturday, 19 November 2011, 10am -6pm
Grand Parade, University of Brighton

Deadline for abstracts: 22 August 2011
The University of Brighton brings together a day of creative workshops, discussions and screenings on storytelling for Film and TV as part of Cine City’s Brighton Film Festival. With three strands offering the best ideas in drama, documentary and the academic, the focus is on stories that sell, writing that works and thinking that matters.
Workshops and Panel Sessions
With a keynote address, workshops and panel sessions with broadcast professionals, we explore what works in TV and Film. Industry experts already confirmed include scriptwriters, Nick Fisher (New Tricks), Sean Cook (Spooks) and Graham Duff (Ideal); documentary film maker, Jerry Rothwell (Donor Unknown);  Head of Development and Executive Producer in Drama at Fresh Pictures, Philippa Collie-Cousins; BBC Editorial Policy Advisor on Independent Factual, Bryony Mortimer; and Espresso TV’s Distributor and Producer, David Hooper.
Film Screenings
The evening’s screenings plus Q&A at Hastings Electric, Eastbourne’s Curzon and the Sallis Benny at Grand Parade reflect the wide choice of media, journalism and writing courses across the University’s campuses.
Academic Discussion
An academic strand will include four sessions with 3 x 15 minutes presentations followed by discussions on the issues raised. We invite abstracts of 150 words that demonstrate evidence of research and/or examples of teaching and learning that bring together critical theory and creative practice in the field of writing for the screen in the following areas:

  • Digital Technology - any aspect of multiplatform or trans-media storytelling
  • Narratives and the ethics of storytelling
  • Linking creative practice and the employability agenda
  • Academic writing courses post-2012 - keeping the humanities sustainable
  • Community based projects

Tickets are £120 full rate and £70 concession
