This research symposium and exhibition, organised by Bath Spa University, seeks to identify a pathway that links the academic, the maker and the making.

Call for papers
Postgraduate researchers and students in textile disciplines as well as individual artists critically engaged with their practice are invited to submit abstracts for presentations of twenty minutes in length on the theme of ‘Material Evidence’.


The symposium will allow participants to connect with the following aspects of engagement with textiles and will invite speakers to present papers on issues relating to any of the following:

1. The use of material: Physical attributes of materials
                                     Methodologies

2. Re-assessing values: Academic
                                        Digital
                                        Shifting perceptions - reconnecting with making & materials

3. The language of material: The ability of material to convey concept
                                              History of material

The day will include presentations by key-note speakers including Maxine Bristow and Amy Houghton and will be an opportunity to show current research work in the vaults gallery space at Corsham Court for the day. All delegates, as well as those presenting papers, will be encouraged to take this opportunity to show their work/work in progress in this setting.

This symposium will focus on how academic research can inform and inspire practical work and how these can work together symbiotically.
