The Future of Educational Development

Glasgow Caledonian University
30 October 2009 11:00-15:00

Educational development practice within higher education has expanded and shaped itself in response to the changing higher education environment of the last forty years (Land, 2004). Now educational development stands ‘on the threshold of becoming a profession or a discipline in its own right (Grant et al, 2009). Its position, between management and practitioners, however, is ‘precarious’ (Clegg, 2008) and future developments are far from certain. In this Academic Practice Network meeting, three papers will explore some possible futures for educational development and stimulate discussions about where the field is heading.

David Gosling (University of Plymouth) will consider the role of educational developers and educational development.

Darren Comber (University of Aberdeen) and Lorraine Walsh (University of Dundee) will focus on postgraduate certificates for new lecturers and issues of disciplinarity.

Allison Littlejohn will explore research-led development and new models of educational development practice.
