Taking the University to the Community

This is the first in a series of 19 research seminars, taking place in different institutions across the UK, launched by the Higher Education Academy in association with Action on Access and Equality Unit.

This seminar draws out some of the features of a curriculum and the model of delivery that can give access and support to students from disadvantaged communities who are new to higher education.

The seminar explores strategies to overcome barriers encountered by students.  The "Openings" programme short courses will be used as a case study of curriculum design which integrates study skills development and curriculum content.  A second case study will look at delivery models used in London in partnership with extended schools and children's services.

Practitioners and academics will have the opportunity to share an develop good practice in supporting the recruitment, retention and achievement of students from disadvantaged communities.
