Bringing Innovation to Life: from adversity comes opportunity

The fifth JISC international online conference

This conference is for practitioners, e-learning co-ordinators and managers in further and higher education, researchers, staff developers and learning technologists. The conference will also be of interest to participants from countries other than the UK.

Theme 1: Releasing the potential (runs for 48 hours from 8.30 on Thursday, 23 November)

Focuses on some of the key drivers for institutional change and looks at the impact and implications for universities and colleges and how they are using technology-enhanced learning to sustain innovation and continue to provide high quality learning and teaching.  Drawing on insights from recent JISC-funded research and leading thinkers in the field, this theme asks questions such as:

  • What are educational institutions for and what will the future demand of them in terms of curriculum design and institutional change?
  • We live in a digital age so how can we use technology to improve and transform assessment and feedback practices to offer valuable experiences to learners?
  • How can an organisation develop systems and processes to create an environment where the potential to innovate is fostered and can continue to flourish?
  • What do students really want?  With insights from NUS projects exploring what students expect from their educational experience in terms of assessment and feedback, digital literacies, personal development and green ICT.

Theme 2: Realising the value (runs for 48 hours from 8.30 on Thursday, 25 November)

This theme showcases practice from universities and colleges and shows how they are responding to the key drivers for change and embedding innovative practice across their institutions. It will explore:

  • How are innovations adopted and embedded?
  • How are mobile and handheld devices changing learning and teaching? How are they impacting on educational practices and what are the implications in terms of cost-benefits?
  • Maintaining innovation: what does it take to create future-focused learning? How can innovation in curriculum delivery be maintained in a climate of economic restraint?
  • How we can harness the power of partnerships and new ways of working to sustain innovation?  What are the structures and processes that can support this at institutional level and the barriers, enablers and critical success factors that contribute to maintaining successful long-term partnerships?
  • How we can use collaborative technology to enhance and shape an educational future that is effective and financially achievable?

Pre-conference activity and reading week
As well as the main conference themes, above, there are numerous activities in the pre-conference week, which they are using to showcase various JISC projects in the Have-a-Go area, and provide tours of a number of virtual world educational locations. You need to make sure you register early, if you want to be able to fully participate in the pre-conference week.


·         How are colleges and universities going to change in light of recent policy announcements?

·         How do we sustain the investment in technology-enhanced learning in the current climate?

·         Do we know what students really want in relation to technology?

·         How can we transform current assessment for learning practice?

·         Is the future mobile?

Innovating e-Learning 2010 invites you to explore these highly topical issues with leading thinkers and experts.   With over 20 live sessions covering these themes followed by in-depth discussion, the format is highly participative; providing opportunities to interact with the keynote speakers and colleagues over and above what would be expected from a more traditional conference.  Live sessions are recorded ensuring you have access to the full programme content and can participate in as many sessions as you wish.

The pre-conference activity and reading week opens on 16th November 2010 and offers a chance to become familiar with the conference environment, take part in interactive guided tours of virtual worlds and try out innovative JISC projects in the 'have-a-go' area.  Support continues after the conference with access to the materials, resources, discussions and recordings of the live sessions.
