E-portfolios: employability or engagement?

PDP is defined as a means by which students can reflect upon their own learning, performance and/or achievement and plan for their personal, educational, and career development (Quality Assurance Agency, 2001)
With Personal Development Planning at the heart of student support and development, a majority of universities are now using E-portfolios to capture evidence of skills and learning curves for a range of purposes, including credit accumulation. What are the benefits, for students themselves, academic tutors and others? What do students think about them? How are they constructed? How are they awarded? How far are they valued by arguably the most important  ‘end-user’, the employer?

The day will offer ideas from which to draw principles for your own and your institution’s practice.
Starting with new guidance papers from CRA[1] <mhtml:mid://00000035/#_ftn1>  we will consider working definitions, and the concept of ownership of E-portfolios, and debate the value of discipline-based and generic approaches.  Colleagues from the universities of Westminster, Kent, Surrey and Kingston will present examples from their practice.

We plan to involve students and employers in the evaluation of the E-portfolio, its content and process.
Presentations and conclusions from the day will be published on the SEEC website. For the future, SEEC’s Skills and PDP Network Group will provide a forum for further discussion around the issues and models arising from the day.
