Doctoring Practice

Bath School of Art & Design (BSAD)
11 September 2008 00:00 - 12 September 2008 00:00

Although many British universities now offer PhD supervision in the visual disciplines (art, studio craft, design) within the general academic community ‘practice led’ research is still regarded as a developing, in some quarters a disputed field of activity.

  • What defines practice led PhD research in the visual disciplines and how does it differ from other advanced, investigative creative practices?
  • What criteria inform the construction and pursuit of investigative models at PhD level?
  • How should practitioners in the visual disciplines constitute their activities so as to address the requirements of the PhD and its call for an ‘original’ contribution to ‘knowledge’?

These and similar questions will be discussed at Doctoring Practice, a Symposium on Practice Led PhD Research in Art and Design to be held at Bath School of Art and Design (BSAD) on 12th September 2008.

The Symposium will be preceded by ‘one thing leads to another…’ a student led day of workshops, discussion etc. on 11 September.

To accompany both events, PhD students from BSAD are organising an exhibition of work in progress by research students from BSAD and other HE institutions.

They have sent out a call for submissions – please see the website:
