Academic leadership at the ‘local’ level

University of Chester, Parkgate Road, Chester, CH1 4HJ
9 May 2008 10:30-15:00

Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE)
Academic Practice Network

Academic leadership at a “local” level has been of increasing interest to colleagues researching academic practice, enhancement of the student learning experience and leadership theory applied to the context higher education. In addition to the programme leader role, HEIs have created a number of inter and cross-disciplinary posts to support the development and sharing of practice at School or Faculty level, such as teaching fellowships and learning and teaching co-ordinators.

Research into these areas of work identifies interesting opportunities and challenges for practitioners and manager-academics. Findings can be linked to discipline-specific issues, professional development needs and changes in recognition and reward processes at an institutional level as well as change management. The purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity to share findings in this area more widely and to identify issues that could be explored in further detail, particularly those which relate to the changing nature and demands of the academic role. The session will include the following presentations:
Paul Blackmore, Director, Kings Institute of Learning and Teaching, King’s College, London: Paul will report on HEA funded research into module leadership

Elizabeth Noonan and Bairbre Redmond, University College Dublin: Elizabeth and Bairbre will present their research into using a fellowship programme to support academic change and development;

Kate Irving, University of Chester: Kate will present research that focuses on the learning, teaching and assessment co-ordinator role.

Network Events are free to SRHE members as part of their membership package.
The delegate fee for non-members is £25/£20 students
