A Special Relationship? Teaching English with Media Studies

This event, sponsored by the English Subject Centre of the Higher Education Academy (, will provide a space to explore the relationship between the disciplines of English and Media Studies in terms of: programme design and content; teaching methodologies; and the place of theory in the syllabus. It is of interest to those who teach on further and higher education programmes which offer any kind of combination of the two subjects, English and Media Studies.

The QAA Benchmarking Statement for English now acknowledges the teaching of literary texts together with other media and 'cultural forms' and it explicitly acknowledges Cultural Studies-based programmes as an important sector of English provision. In the light of this, it is an important time to review the history of the relationship between English and Media Studies and to think about the future direction of that relationship. In addition, the current technological landscape promises to change the concept of the literary text itself and the boundaries between the two subjects are surely set to blur even further.
